For the Birds 2007-09

Canada Geese - a variable species that includes sizes ranging from 25"-45", this goose is widespread and is practically worldwide. This feature has caused many cities to institute culling programs when numbers become a problem. Geese prefer grassy areas like parks, beaches and farmland which makes the Okanagan a perfect habitat.

A partnership of Okanagan municipalities (the Okanagan Valley Goose Management Program) instituted egg addling in 2007 at a cost of $136,000. It proved more successful than planned, and as a result there will be approximately 850 fewer goslings.

Originally the goose migrated but the availability of food, some due to human feeding, has encouraged a year round population.

The Canada Goose has a black neck, white cheeks and brownish breast. Bill and legs are black. When traveling, long strings of geese pass high overhead in a 'V' formation. This flight and their call were often a herald of spring and fall.

The nest can be built on an island or islet in a marsh, but are now commonly found on buildings and cliffs. For many years there was a nesting on the supports of the old Perry Dock on the Westside. This meant that the young dropped into the lake when ready to leave the nest.

A smaller version of the Canada Goose, known as a Cackling Goose, is found in the Okanagan as well. It has a more rounded head, a shorter bill and weighs less than half as much as its larger relative.
Occasionally other species are seen in the valley like Ross's Goose, Snow Goose, and White Fronted Goose.

To observe massive flocks of snow geese, visit the Reifel Wildlife Sanctuary in Delta in November-December. Prairie residents will have memories of spring and fall migrations. These birds nest on the tundra and in fact have increased in numbers so drastically that parts of the tundra are being destroyed.

The Central Okanagan has a very active Birder's Group which is always welcoming new members. If interested phone Pat Westheuser at 769-6605.
