Q: I have had a suet feeder up for most of the winter but why haven't I seen any birds on it?
A: Suet is only attractive to a limited amount of insect-eating birds. Here in the Okanagan, you can hope to see Chickadees, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, and Flickers at your suet feeders. A key factor in attracting suet-eating birds is to use suet cakes made with high quality rendered beef kidney fat. Start out with a cake that has Black Oil Sunflower seeds in it. The birds will recognize it by sight. Often suet cakes are just overlooked by the birds. Once a bird has found the feeder, he'll tell two friends etc. etc., and you are in business.
Dear Laura:
Q: What would you recommend to help me identify different birdcalls?
A: There is an excellent CD on the market called 'Bird Songs of the Okanagan' by John Neville. It features fifty-five different species. There is also a video of Okanagan birds called 'An Okanagan Window on Birds', which makes a great addition to the CD.
Dear Laura:
Q: Why are our Okanagan Quail called 'California Quail'?
A: The California Quail is the state bird of California. They were originally brought to the Okanagan over one hundred years ago for the purpose of hunting. The hunters could not have been very good, as we have an abundance of Quail in many parts of the Valley. Their favorite seed is White Millet, but are also fond of Cracked Corn. A covered Quail feeder is a good idea in the winter to keep the snow and rain off their seeds. |
