It is time once again for the hills around the Bluegrass Capital of Canada to ring with the sound of music. Following hard on the heels of a record twelve successful years The Summerland Bluegrass Group presents the 13th Annual ‘Bluegrass Capital of Canada’ Bluegrass Festival.  Other regional festivals will lead up to and follow the Summerland example of family musical outings. Musicians of all stripes will attend to be entertained or to participate themselves in one of the most relaxing and entertaining musical events staged regularly in the Okanagan. Performed at the Summerland Rodeo Grounds above the city the venue provides an ideal outdoor atmosphere in a near natural amphitheatre complete with the sights, sounds and smells of a Spring County Fair. Attendees arrive at the Rodeo Grounds after travelling through the picturesque community of Summerland. Travelling over the rough hill-climbing road access to the staging site past farms, gated acreages and the Kettle Valley Steam Railway their journey seems preparatory to the down-home bonhomie and knee slapping, foot stomping, hand clapping good time.

Musicians and spectators alike arrive at the Summerland Rodeo Grounds in all manner of transportation. With acres of camping space available for dry camping, everything from tent-packing bikers to 45-foot motor homes and everything in between compete for the ideal space. Musicians arrive at the site ready to pitch their individual campsite or to circle the wagons. Those with awnings or tented kiosks stake out the most suitable campsites and establish a ‘personal’ musical jam area. Some of the best entertainment is generated ‘off-stage’ at these informal practice areas where precision and exercising the vocal ‘chords’ meets with light-hearted ribbing. Jokes, laughter and good ole home-cooked food washed down with orange juice or strong coffee complete the musical camping experience. Festival organizers and volunteers of The Summerland Bluegrass Group checked through nearly two hundred RVs last year and expects more this year. They came from all over Canada and the United States with the farthest coming in from Florida. Daily attendance by the public just out to enjoy a family outing, good food and even better music accounted for about another five hundred persons per day.
From the opening ceremonies on Friday evening to the closing ceremonies on Sunday afternoon the hills above Summerland will ring with harmony of song, music and the spirit of camaraderie. C’mon out now ya’ hear! Enjoy a great family musical weekend.
Note: The Summerland Bluegrass Festival is a family occasion and therefore a dry festival. There can be no consumption of alcohol in any public area. Food and refreshment will be available to the public at reasonable prices. Food concessions will be provided by The Summerland Lions Club, the Ladies of the Summerland Bluegrass Group, and selected concessionaires. See related articles this page.
