November's flower of the month is the Chrysanthemum. Apparently, to dream of Chrysanthemums means 'pleasant times.'
The origins of birthstones, and flowers associated with each month goes back to the middle age when Astrologers and magicians taught complicated systems of correlations or correspondences involving such things as jewels, plants, planets and signs of the zodiac etc. The combinations vary in different parts of the world.
Tips for November clean up; after chrysanthemums have stopped blooming cut back their stems close to the ground and cleanup the debris to help eliminate chances of disease.
After the ground freezes mulch semi-hardy, or more tender perennials and strawberries etc. If you have mice or other rodents don't put down too much mulch, as it encourages them and gives them a place to hide from predators. For the same reason don't mulch right up against tree trunks etc. Give cedars, roses and other shrubs one last deep watering then drain and roll up hoses and store for winter. Clean up garden tools and store. Clean and change oil on lawn mowers, rototillers etc. Order seed catalogues for spring browsing.
Put out bird feeders.
Rake up leaves etc. I like to use my leaves as mulch around shrubs and perennials. Leaves decompose and enrich the soil, but don't use any leaves from diseased trees or shrubs. Bacteria and fungus will over winter in the mulch and cause an even greater problem next season. Trim and clean up roses but don't prune back too far. You need enough cane left to allow for winter damage. The main pruning is usually done in spring.
When cleaning up perennials, I like to leave some seed heads for the birds and for a bit of winter interest in the garden… I never seem to get everything cleaned up anyway and this always strikes me as a lovely excuse.
Try storing your bulbs and tubers in old nylon stockings. Hang them in a cool dry place. The stockings allow the air to circulate and you are less likely to have rot set in from damp bulbs.
