Trelliswork has been popular for a long time. Royalty used it because it could be erected fast to make a unique statement. Baroque operas and ballets at the court of Louis XIV used trelliswork as part of stage sets. However it used to be that when I thought of trellis, it was the wooden fan shaped one that came to mind. Wooden trellis' are still popular and come in a number of other shapes and sizes, but that is just the beginning. The new privacy trellis' that are stamped out of plastic and never need painting are great; just cut to size. However it's the new wrought iron worked ones that really catch my eye. We have them in the greenhouse and they are really decorative, semi-circular ones and slightly chevron shaped ones, and that's just the beginning of what's available. They can be used in so many ways. Another new product that captured my imagination [I love stuff that makes gardening easier] trellis netting. This stuff is lightweight, sort of like heavy fish line with 6 inch squares. It comes in a piece 6' x 20' but can be cut to whatever size you need. Use it to make a tent shaped trellis to grow cucumbers, squash, etc. They are easier to pick and you get them off the ground so no dirt or disease. It is UV stabilized so it lasts for years. You could of course use it as is for pea or bean netting but that's just too easy.
I love the idea of using trelliswork to make a small private area to sit in the yard. The uses are endless; in one magazine I picked up, it was used around the outside air conditioner, or heating unit for the home. This allows the air to circulate and offers easy access while creating an attractive feature. Trelliswork built into and as part of the fencing is really attractive as well as functional, and as archways they can make an otherwise dull or boring entrance a real feature. Trellis archways leading down to a narrow pathway make it more alluring and almost lead the visitor on. A really unique trellis with a lovely flowering vine can make a wonderful focal point for your garden or can hide an otherwise ugly or boring view. They are of course great for privacy but can also be purely decorative if you wish. The ideas are as endless as the types of trellising that you can buy or create. Try painting a wooden trellis a bright color, perhaps an intense blue or sunny yellow, or have one built with a window in the centre and hang a window box below filled with flowers, like we have in the greenhouse. Or hang a wind chime or other decorative garden piece in the window. You can have no end of fun with trelliswork, and the beauty of it is it can be functional or whimsical depending on your taste, and it doesn't have to be expensive.
