Sample Image Senior Sports Personality for May - Art Zilkie (Summerland)

It is that time of year again when the golf links are open and everyone is outdoors enjoying sunshine and fresh air. To no one is it more important than seniors who need to get out of the house, play and stay active (just like Mom used to say!). Our feature story this month on golf introduces one of the many seniors who remain active playing golf. Art Zilkie, of the Summerland Old-timers Golf Group, is out several times each week bashing the balls and tweaking his swing. Although he won’t anytime soon be a challenge to the likes of Tiger Woods for the all time best golfer award, Art feels that when he grows up and given sufficient time and practice he may very well be able to do so. Art, who hails from Manitoba, was very active in his youth in all manner of sport but as the years added to his age (a youthful 91 golden years) he now concentrates on just two sports – golf in the summer and curling in the winter (both very socially demanding sports). Art arrived in Summerland twenty-eight years ago after retiring from a tough, hardworking life working with Manitoba Hydro. He now plays golf as part of a Seniors Golf Group at Sumac Ridge (Best Little Golf Course in Canada) and at Sage Mesa (The Best Golf Views in the South Okanagan)! Art attributes his longevity in these two sports to the accumulation of good friends and great people. Congratulations Art, keep up the good side, you are a sterling example of an active senior participating in active sports.
