Elsie Oates – Golf into her 97th Year. PDF Print E-mail
Sample ImageIt wasn’t as though her family was into golfing but her interest began in her mid-teens. When she was initially introduced to golf she really didn’t like the game. However, something made her stick to the game and while following the positive example of her then boyfriend she was smitten by the golfing bug if not by the gentleman himself. So began a life-long association with the game and her connection with the golfing fraternity. Born in Medicine Hat, AB Elsie Oates arrived in Summerland in 1981 with her husband where they found their retirement home and their golf Mecca. Elsie maintains that the reason she is in such vigorous good health is due to getting out into the fresh air by remaining active while golfing three times a week. She maintains that golf reduces stress and provides the opportunity to meet some of the most pleasant people in the valley while, at the same time, enjoying exceptional scenery. Elsie recommends golf as an activity for young people but is concerned that the golf industry is placing the sport beyond the monetary means of most young people today. She would like to see the professionals in the industry as well as member associations and clubs engage younger people by making the game more accessible. Congratulations Elsie, keep up the good work and keep that head down. You are a sterling example of an active senior remaining involved in an active sport.
