Senior Sports Personality of the Month –Gordon and Lucille Beach (Sailors)
Our story on sailing and learning to sail took us to the South Okanagan Sailing Association (SOSA) on Okanagan Lake near Summerland where we encountered our senior sports personalities. They were busy with an Open House and because they were providing ‘familiarization boat rides’ it took us some time before we could initiate an interview. As the interview progressed it became patently obvious that more than a few people have been kept waiting to pin this active pair of seniors down for any length of time. Gordon and Lucille Beach of Summerland are very active members of SOSA where they sail, socialize, organize and are prepared to do just about anything to promote the Association and keep it operating effectively. In addition to sailing Gordon is responsible for the on-going maintenance and repair of the club boats (and just about anything else that needs fixing); while Lucille is involved in just about everything social and keeping things clean and in good order. However, sailing isn’t the only activity that keeps this senior pair of Snowbirds fit and healthy. Gordon, a former RCAF Engine Technician, is the former proprietor of Gordon’s Clock and Watch Repair. Since retiring both of these fit and healthy seniors keep continuously active, even while travelling and cruising, through their love of dance, clogging, pole walking, and volksmarching. In the recent Summerland Action Fest they completed the 5.4 km pole walking event in only forty-seven minutes. Congratulations Gordon and Lucille; you are setting a sterling example of active seniors keeping fit and involved while engaging in active sport.
