Senior Sport Profile -Roy Potter PDF Print E-mail

The subject of Dance as Sport this month places focus on the music to which the senior population dance. A burgeoning cadre of volunteer musicians filling the ranks of volunteer bands provides the music. Interesting in these phenomena is that it is terrific music provided by terrific musicians who are mainly seniors themselves.

Could it be that newer generation musicians know nothing about dance music where you actually embrace your dance partner? Involved in one of these groups is a senior who is 68 years young and continues to enjoy an active, music-oriented lifestyle.

Arriving in Summerland from a pillar-to-post self-employed highway construction lifestyle is a talented and prolific acoustic musician. Roy Potter can be found playing almost the full variety of acoustic stringed instruments including the guitar, mandolin, banjo and dobro. Supported by wife Alma who plays the fiddle and mandolin, Roy can be found around the Thompson-Okanagan encouraging and tutoring other musicians, participating in and organizing musical jams, and organizing or assisting with the organization of musical festivals including the renowned Summerland Bluegrass Festival.

A respectful salute goes out to Roy and Alma Potter who continue to enhance the joy and benefits of music and dance to help us live the health and fitness benefits of a full, active, and community service lifestyle. Well done Roy and Alma!
