It's that time of year again when one can't make excuses for not getting outside and getting some form of exercise and fresh air. It's as simple as putting on the shoes, opening the door and ambling outside to say hello to the neighbours or strolling down to the coffee shop for a cuppa and some friendly conversation. No matter how sophisticated we try and make the effort one of the best forms of exercise for those who are moving (too quickly) into their advanced years is just simply - walking.

You save so much gas (and money) doing it - not to mention the environment. For those who want to be a little more adventuresome and take it up a notch you just pick up the pace a bit, stretch out the length of the stride and start swinging the arms a little more - say - to shoulder height (starts to feel like marching). Now add some poles and you have a new sport activity called Pole Walking.

Pole Walking burns 30% more calories, increases the cardio workout considerably, makes walking uphill much, much easier, and you don't even notice the extra effort! Now leave the city sidewalks and meander up one of the gently sloping hills or forestry trails just outside of town and before you know it you are Hiking!

The entire Thompson/Okanagan is honeycombed with walking and hiding trails, all rated for their level of difficulty. Those that allow dogs to accompany you are noted as well. Some offer gorgeous scenery for the special pleasure of the photographers, others are quiet, shady trails, and several come complete with waterfalls. Wherever you live in our area, there are great trails nearby for you to explore and enjoy. If you have a particular favourite, share it with our readers.
