In our sports article last month we wrote about Senior Golf Groups springing up throughout the Okanagan. We have noticed, as well, that there is another rapidly growing segment of the population that have discovered the beneficial effects of the game of golf. Whatever the reason for the infusion of their numbers it is pleasant to see the ladies of the valley taking to the links in ever-increasing numbers. The women have always been there but not in the numbers now evident on most courses in the Okanagan. Not only do the ladies seem to have a natural affinity for golf by consistently hitting the ball straight; but their increase in numbers on the fairways is having a calming effect on the volatile male practitioners of the game. Off-coloured humour and crude language are no longer acceptable or tolerated. Whereas many of the men hearing such nonsense took the easy way out by ignoring such rude behaviour, the ladies have no such compunction and are ready, willing and able to send the names of any such miscreants directly to club management. That is a good thing! Many a sport could use a little cleaning up. (Ladies - We need you participating in hockey and slow-pitch ball as well). In addition to regularly playing the game in increasing numbers the women have also claimed dedicated course time for themselves; have established ladies only golf groups; and initiated several Women’s Tournaments as well as playing in mixed groupings. Local club management has recognized the phenomena and are taking the presence of women seriously by promoting their participation. Some Clubs are promoting prize pools, Women Only lessons, Ladies Nights and price reductions for women booking groups of eight or more. (Make sure you request the reduced pricing). Of particular note is the number of women who are taking part in golf lessons throughout the off-season and which carry on into the spring and summer. These lessons can be either formal private lessons or informal ‘swing clinics’. Following hard on the heels of golf and swing theory conducted in local schools and community colleges are the practi cal sessions at the practice ranges where local pros can correct even the most discouraging mistakes. While the Golf Academies and Formal Lessons can put a small dent in the housekeeping budget swing clinics are eminently affordable and scheduled appropriately to enable maximum participation. For a nominal fee and an hour of your time, local CPGA teaching pros are ready to improve your game through improved swing techniques. All they ask is that you arrive at the clinic ahead of time, pay, prepare and warm up, open your mind, focus on improvement then enjoy the experience. So, ladies call your local course and book into the swing clinic. In the South Okanagan contact Sage Mesa Golf Course (492-8814) to book a Friday evening clinic with consummate CPGA Teaching Pro Bryan Hart (494-0429). For other locations please consult the Golf Course advertisements in this publication on Page 12. Let the advertisers know that you saw their ad in YOUR Seniors Choice Newsmagazine.
