The Tenth Anniversary Edition of the Vernon Senior Oldtimers' Harvest Hockey Jamboree - 2006 |

We have written about the Vernon Senior Oldtimers Harvest Hockey Jamboree before but this hockey tournament just keeps getting better each year. From very simple beginnings the Vernon Senior Oldtimers Harvest Hockey Jamboree has evolved into the most successful and desired Senior Oldtimer hockey tournament in Western Canada. The tournament promotes the simplest yet most important characteristics of seniors' recreational sport. Inherent in the organizational concept are the factors of inclusion, respect, camaraderie, sportsmanship, fair play and most importantly FUN.
From the great meal and entertainment at the Tournament Meet and Greet in the well-appointed facilities of Vernon's Schubert Centre to the final whistle at the Vernon Multiplex the week is filled with the sheer enjoyment of renewing old acquaintances and playing hockey the way it used to be played - a team sport. From the same zero point start, to organizing newly found mates into positions where they make their greatest contribution, these thrown together team players of all skill levels and calibre bond, organize and then play like they were eighteen again. (Telling tales out of school some of the wives say their lifemate thinks he is eighteen again - until he gets home after the tournament and finds the sofa!) The essence of low-key simplicity continues in what tournament organizers Mike and Joyce Todd have accomplished with the format of the Vernon Harvest Hockey Jamboree.
In its TENTH iteration Vernon's senior hockey talent and business community combined their collective resources to provide sponsorship and organizational assistance. Recognizing the economic benefit of having over two hundred seniors in town for a week the business community has answered the call for sponsorship. Stepping up to Centre Ice this year as a major sponsor is All Canadian Investment Corporation (ACIC); the Salmon Arm based Mortgage Investment Corporation (MIC). ACIC is providing much needed sponsorship assistance from the provision of two sets of distinctive, high quality white (Team Canada 1992) uniforms, to the musicians to entertain at the Wednesday Night Dinner Dance, to a special contribution assigned to the Vernon TREEHOUSE Project - ACIC is demonstrating corporate commitment to the North Okanogan, the Community of Vernon and encouraging seniors to remain involved in physically active sport.
Introduced last year by Joyce Todd, as testimony to the generosity and unselfishness of seniors, is support and sponsorship of 'The Tree House Project'. Money that would otherwise have been spent on a tournament souvenir has instead been contributed to this very worthwhile charitable cause. The project is a fund-raising effort to provide Vernon the facilities of a Child Development Centre. Contact Joyce Todd 250-549-2311 if you would like add your contribution to that of ACIC and these 'older' hockey-playing stars. See also http://www.nona-cdc.com/
Mike and Joyce Todd have nurtured this superb tournament concept in Vernon. One remaining challenge is to secure additional sponsorship of at least one major Vernon business entity. ACIC issues a challenge to the Vernon business community to join them in like-minded sponsorship of active seniors involved in active lifestyles and support of the HHJ.
