Travel Treks - Antarctica
by Lorraine Gibson
Antarctica is a great destination! Global warming might spoil this pristine area so now might be the time to decide to trek to Antarctica. Antarctica is for the intrepid traveller, it calls to explorers, scientists and nature lovers.
There are cruise ships that explore South America and also include Antarctica in their ports of call. For example Oceania Cruises Dec. 21st sailing Buenos Aires - Valparaiso includes scenic cruising of Antarctica: Deception Island, Paradise Bay and Half Moon Island. However, to get up close you need to take a small ship out of Ushuaia, such as the Explorer (GAP Adventures) which has only 108 passengers and visits South Georgia Island ( a former whaling station) and Elephant Island. Stops are dependent upon the weather but could also include Paradise Harbour and Neko Harbour.
If you are venturing this far south then you also need to include cruising around the horn, which is a landmark for even the most experienced travellers. Other side trips could include: seeing the Chilian fjords, touring the Chilian vineyards or seeing the spectacular Iguassu Falls, which is located at the Brazil/ Argentina border.
There is plenty of opportunity to see wildlife, specifically lots of penguins!!! Visiting a penguin rookery is a highlight of this trip! Antarctica can also be reached by sailing from New Zealand or Australia. These extraordinary voyages enable a priviledged few to visit an Emperor Penguin rookery. The largest penguins and the only birds to breed on frozen sea.
