Our fund raising dinner at Robbies was another big success. We did have some door prizes to give away too. Congratulations to all the winners and a big Thank You to all who donated. Also a big Thank You to John Plowman, Pearl Thompson, Pearl Wark, Barb Olson and Dorothy Schofield for all the help organizing the event and making sure it would be a success.
Our general meeting in June was well attended and our next meeting will be on Thursday, July 15, at 10:00am at the Heritage House. Please make it a point to attend. See you there.
BC Seniors' Games BC Seniors' Games - Zone 8 - 2004 May Report submitted by Wilf Schneider
We now have a date for our fund raising dinner at Robbies Restaurant on Lansdowne Street. The date is Monday, June 21, between the hours of 5:00 P.M. to 8:00. We expect to again have a 50-50 draw and a few door prizes. Tickets are $12.00 each with a choice of chicken, steak or fish. It isn't necessary to be a member of the Seniors' Games to come and enjoy the evening. Tickets are available from John Plowman 372 7542, Liz Karpluk 374 4312, Pearl Thompson 376 8403, or from any of the other executive members. Bring your family, bring your friends and encourage others to come too.
You have probably guessed by now that we have a lot of loyal and dedicated volunteers who give much of their time to help make the Games a success. We are always looking for additional people who would like to help and take an active interest in the various sports we are involved in. We are all grateful to our volunteers and appreciate all they do in promoting the events.
We have been notified by the Penticton Games' Committee that they have made changes in the Track & Field events. There will be no Pole Vaulting event this year. Some of times for a few events have been changed and every one taking part in the Track & Field events will have an additional form to complete. It will probably not be necessary to have play-downs in Track & Field and I would appreciate hearing from any one planning on entering this event before the middle of May so that we can get the necessary forms sent to you.. My telephone number is 374 7201.
All of our event co-ordinators have been supplied with the General Rules and Regulations of the Games as well as the specific Rules and Regulations for the sport they are involved in. If you have access to a computer you are also able to find the Rules in the Games web site: www.bcseniorsgames.org and follow the links to rule book. We've already mentioned that we have 3 new sports this year. Hockey, Soccer and Archery events will take place for the first time. There is also a signifanct change in Slo-Pitch rules in that there will be 4 categories this year: Men's 55+, Men's 65+, Co-ed 65+ and, most importantly, Women's 55+ The Co-ed team requires 3 women ovder 60.
Premier Gordon Campell has announced that the 2005 B.C. Seniors' Games will be hosted by the Cowichan Valley communities and the 2006 Seniors' Games will take place in Abbotsford. This is the first time that the Games are being held in either community.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, May 20, starting at 10:00am at the Heritage House. See you there!
BC Seniors' Games - Zone 8 - April Report submitted by Wilf Schneider
All of our sport co-ordinators are busy right now lining up participants for the varous events and planning for the play-downs. We reported some play-off dates last month and here are a few more dates: Carpet Bowling - April 21 in Revelstoke Darts - May 16 at the Chase Legion 5 Pin Bowling - May 3 at Falcon Lanes Floor Curling - May 12 at the KXA Horseshoes - May 19 in Kamloops Snooker - May 1 in Sorrento Track & Field - May 26
In all cases the cut-off date for entering is one week prior to the play-off date. In some events play-offs may not be required but we still need to have the Zone 8 registration form one week prior to date listed above for that event. If there are any questions, please contact the co-ordinator for the sport or event.
The people who are successful in winning during the Zone 8 play-offs are expected to participate in Penticton. The Host City Registration Form must be completed and signed. It is very important that all questions on the form are answered and please remember to bring your Care Card. It is also the responsibility of the participants to arrange for their own transportation to Penticton and to arrange for their own accomodations there.
Membership cards are now available. Pearl Wark is in charge of Membership but the cards are also available from any of the sport co-ordinators. The annual cost is $10.00. Any one trying out for any of the events or going to the Games will require a membership card. Of course, membership is open to any one - it is not necessary to take part in the events.
The B.C. Seniors' Games do have sponsors too. Among them are Shoppers Drug Mart, Save-on-Foods, Air Canada Jazz, Royal Canadian Legion, City of Penticton, Province of British Columbia and the B.C. Games Society. Save-on-Foods provided the daily lunches in Chilliwack last year and they were excellent. The Royal Canadian Legion provide the medals that the competitors work so hard for and Air Canada Jazz provided a ticket for 2 to a lucky participant. We are grateful for the sponsors contributions that help to make the Games such a success.
We are going to have another fund-raising dinner at Robbies in June. These dinners are very popular and we'll have full details on this in our next issue. Our next meeting will be at the Heritage House on Thursday, April 15, at 10:00 A.M. We encourage all interested to attend, particularly those participating in any of the Games events. See you there.

B.C. Seniors' Games - Zone 8 - 2004 February Report (submitted by Wilf Schneider)
Last month I listed the local co-ordinators for the various sports we will have at the Games in Penticton. We now have a co-ordinator for Slo-Pitch, namely, Stan Fell, telephone number 374 3397. Also, I have agreed to look after Track & Field until some one else volunteers and my telephone number is 374 7201. We have been advised that Archery may be a demonstration sport at the Games this year. More on this later. I have a couple of corrections to make to last month's list. Ed Wasylik's correct telehphone umber is 579 5676. He is looking after Soccer. Peter Baron is our new sport co-ordinator for Cycling and his telephone number is 372 8292. And the new sport co-ordinator for Horseshoes is Judy Stewart, telephone number 453 9366. Seniors interested in taking part in any of the sports are urged to contact the co-ordinator of the sport they are interested in.
We are not planning on having a bus for particiapants going to the Games this year. Last year we had minimal interest in a bus and Penticton is quite a bit closer for travelling than Chilliwach was. To take part in the Games a person must become a member of the B.C. Games Socity and the cost of this is $10.00 per year. In addition there is a Zone 8 cost of $2.00 per sport you enter or try out for. Those attending the actual Games in Pentictin must also pay a $45.00 registration fee and this includes the cost of the banquet and lunches for three days. For full details of other costs for Golf and Ice Hockey, please check with the co-ordinator of that sport.
In our column we have discussed the Provincial Seniors' Games. There are also Canada Senior Games. These will be held in Whitehorse, Yukon, September 1 to 5. That's right, they have the same date for their Games as we have for ours this year in Penticton. For more information on these Games contact: 2004 Canada Senior Games Box 33124, Whitehorse, Yukon Y1A 5Y5 Ph. 867 667 2189 - Fax 867 667 2186 E-mail

You will be able to find a list of hotels and R.V. sites as well as where each sport will take place. Not all of the information has been up-dated yet and in due time the Rule Book will also be available on line. There is also a lot of other information available on these 2 web sites.
We had been advised that the Heritage House would not be availabe of our meetings, but guess what - our next general meeting will be at the Heritage House after all. The meeting is on Thursday, February 19, and starts at 10:00 A.M. All interested in taking part in the Games are urged to attend our meetings. You will requirte a parking permit to park in the parking lot there and if you have not already given Dorothy Schofield your car license number, please call her as soon as possible as she is arranging for the permits. Dorothy's telephone number is 374 7660. See you at the meeting.
