The Mounties Are Coming

July 2005

The RCMP Musical Ride is coming to Kelowna for two performances on Sunday, August 7 at 2:00pm and 7:00pm at Prospera Place.

The Okanagan/Mission Lions Club and the RCMP Veterans Association are proud to once again host this colorful tradition with its 32 black horses, scarlet uniforms and lances.

The first officially recorded Musical Ride was performed in Regina in 1887. Members of the Musical Ride are, first and foremost, police officers who, after at least two years of active police work, volunteer for duty with the Musical Ride. Most members are non-riders prior to their equestrian training with the RCMP; however, once they complete the courses of instruction, they not only become riders but ambassadors of goodwill. Working through a unique medium, they promote the RCMP's image throughout Canada and the world. RCMP members only remain with the Musical Ride for three years, which ensures an annual rotation of approximately one third of the riders.

Today, in keeping with tradition, a full troop of 32 riders and horses, plus the member in charge perform the Musical Ride. The Musical Ride consists of the execution of a variety of intricate figures and cavalry drills choreographed to music. Demanding utmost control, timing and co-ordination, these movements are formed by horse and riders in two's, four's and eight's at the trot and the canter. The highlight of the Musical Ride is, without a doubt, the CHARGE, when lances, with their red and white pennons, are lowered and the riders and their mounts launch into the gallop.

This year's show at Prospera Place will have several special features. Outside Prospera Place, prior to the ride, there will be entertainment and displays. On the inside, before the ride begins, there will be 45 minutes of family entertainment. In addition, the horses are being housed at Memorial Arena and the general public is invited to visit the horses and chat with the riders August 6-8.

A special highlight of this year's show is the final salute to the Year of the Veteran. A special area has been set-aside for Veterans and their families. Veterans are asked to identify themselves when purchasing tickets, and to attend the performance in either their Veteran's uniform or their Legion dress, as they will be asked to stand at the conclusion of the ride and be acknowledged.

Tickets are available from the ticket window at Prospera Place, on line at selectyourtickets.com. or by phoning 762-5050. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for children.
