Retirement Alternatives - Becoming a Snowbird in BC
Seniors Choice Newsmagazine, July 2007

It all about lifestyle, and what you enjoy. We all know outdoor living is healthy A house or condominium is not for everyone. Travel anyone? More and more people are taking to the roads or skies in the fall and heading south. Some to the USA and others to the warmest spot in Canada- the Okanagan Valley.

Whatever your choice, one of the best kinds of downsizing, being able to travel, and not have maintenance work facing you when you get home is RVing. This encompasses a wide variety of vehicles, trailers, 5th wheels, and motor homes if you want to take your bed with you. Parks where you rent a space by the week or month are quite plentiful and offer a variety of amenities.

Another type of an RV home is the "park model" which is usually left on your site. These are like small mobile homes and are very nicely appointed. A park model can be moved, but are found mostly in parks where people are living for weeks at a time.

Fortunately, in BC we have RV parks where you own your lot. These are becoming ever more popular, both with people who like to travel for months, and people who just want a smaller home, less money invested, and low maintenance. These lots are larger than the rental spaces, and when you decide to sell, you can. They also meet the BC medical residency requirements. There is a monthly maintenance fee for the common area maintenance and amenity expenses. It is another option to check into if you have thought of travel, or just to take your time to look around. And your property value keeps increasing!
