AUTOMOBILE SAFETY TIPS
- remove keys, close windows and lock doors each time you leave your car - lock doors while driving
- never leave car unattended with engine running
- carry spare keys
- do not leave in secret hiding place
- lock identification papers and automatic garage door opener in glove compartment
- do not leave credit cards and/or receipts in car
- if valuables, luggage, or packages must be left in car, store in trunk or under luggage cover in hatchback
- avoid parking in dark, secluded areas
- use removable brackets for car stereos lock in trunk or take with you
- inventory accessories by recording serial numbers and/or other identifying marks - keep list in safe place other than vehicle
- engrave valuables with driver’s license number
- replace standard door lock knobs (which can be opened using bent coat hangers) with tapered knobs
- install auto burglar alarm and advertise fact
- install locking gas cap
- for older model install spiral wire device in gas filler pipe to prevent insertion of siphon hose
- safety devices are available at auto accessory stores such as alarm systems, hood locks, etc.
- if you suspect someone is following you, drive to nearest public place such as gas station or all-night restaurant, and blow your horn
- if you have car trouble, raise hood, lock yourself in, wait for police
- if stranger stops to offer help, do not get out
- ask stranger to call service truck for you
