Used Eye Glasses Going to Cuba

Catharine Goheen, president of Dr. Specs Optical, is collecting used Eye Glasses and frames to take to Cuba in mid November.

A Big Thanks to all the generous individuals who have contributed Eye Glasses on Catharine's various trips to Guatemala, India, Philippines, Honduras, and Peru.

In the past, your kind donations:
  • Have helped prevent child labour,
  • Allowed a failing student to see both the blackboard and the soccer field, resulting in him having a chance to live a normal life.
  • Allowed young men and women to return to work resulting in them being able
    to support a family,
  • Given elderly individuals a chance to contribute to the Family because they now can see. (A son-in-law is more willing to feed an elderly person who can see and because of their improved vision can help mind the children)

In many third world countries, the cost of eyeglasses is equal to one month's pay. The chance of a labourer or a woman buying eye glasses is beyond their dreams.

In Peru, Guatemala and the Philippines, where I have done previous missions, having a pair of eyeglasses is a sign of wealth. When I walked down the streets, only the wealthier people wore eyeglasses.

Unlike Guatemala, Honduras, Peru and many other Third World Counties, the Cuban people are well educated, are clean, eat healthy food, understand the need for clean water, and have access to medical doctors. One of the challenges for the people of Cuba is the American Embargo. If a Doctor makes $10 to $20 per month, and New eye glass frames cost the same in Cuba as they do in Canada, then you can imagine the problem they have.

On my last trip, I delivered 2 large boxes of eyeglasses to a Medical Director of a Hospital in Havana. All of the staff from the janitors, nurses, and secretaries to the doctors were going to benefit from your donation.

With Your past donations you have made a difference in someone's life simply by giving something you no long required.

Anyone who has used reading glasses, prescription eyeglasses, and prescription or non prescription sunglasses is invited to Drop them off at:

  • Dr. Specs Optical - Orchard Plaza
  • Dr. Specs Optical - Penticton Plaza
  • Dr. Specs Optical - Westridge Mall
  • Dr. Specs Optical - Grand Forks
  • Dr. Specs Optical - Salmon Arm

Our Goal is to collect 1000 pairs of Used Eyeglasses.

Okanagan Gleaners - Sock Drive for Orphans

Okanagan Gleaners 9th Annual Sock Drive is underway for 2004, and continues to the end of November. Drop Boxes for (new) socks and undergarments are located at participating merchants, as well as at a number of area churches. Proceeds of the Drive are designated for Orphans and needy Children in Eastern Europe. Volunteer Knitters are adding hundreds of colourful handmade socks, toques and mittens.

Okanagan Gleaners, a non-profit, non-denominational Christian Society, collects, processes and dries culled and surplus vegetables and apples. The dried vegetables are combined into a nutritious Soup-Mix for distribution in needy countries. Since 1996, over ten million servings have been shipped and distributed - literally around the Globe. Besides that, Interior Food Banks, and Penticton's Soupateria, receive fresh produce. Currently, Okanagan Gleaners has a large inventory of potatoes, (donated by Covert Farms) available to Food Banks and Benevolent Agencies for distribution to people in need.

Drop boxes for the Sock Drive are located in area churches and, until November 30th, at these participating merchants:

  • Osoyoos - STEDMANS
  • Oliver - SAAN
  • OK Falls - Pharmacy and IGA
  • Keremeos - Variety Store & IGA
  • Kelowna - Ten Thousand Villages
  • Penticton - Ten Thousand Villages and Zellers
  • Summerland - Home Hardware
  • Peachland - Peachland Pharmacy
  • Vernon - SAAN and Walmart
