Specialized Mental Health Residential Services Planned for Seniors in Kamloops

Interior Health is pleased to announce that Thompson Cariboo Mental Health Services will add three more beds for seniors who require more intensive mental health care within a residential care setting. This brings the total to six specialized residential care beds in Kamloops.

The TGRP is designed to provide a specialized environment of 24-hour professional care for persons with serious mental illness and complex dementia. In the past people requiring this level of care were transferred to Riverview Hospital. This new resource will allow families to have their loved ones closer to home

The Mental Health and Community Care programs in Thompson Cariboo have developed a partnership model that brings together the skills and knowledge of residential care, geriatric psychiatry and the Geriatric Outreach Programs to deliver this specialized residential program with Overlander Residential Care Facility in Kamloops.

These three new beds are part of a program that includes South hills Centre for Tertiary Psychiatric Rehab, the new 44 bed Tertiary Acute Psychiatric Facility on the Royal Inland Hospital Site which includes 24 beds for geriatric psychiatric services and an additional 10 Adult Residential beds in Williams Lake currently in planning phase.

This $17 million investment at Royal Inland is part of the government's commitment to replace outdated institutions with more modern and home-like accommodations and is part of a government program of $138 million to build new mental health facilities across the province.
