City of Vernon RCMP Safe Communities
People who break into residential properties look for opportunities?easy opportunities. They normally enter quickly, take what they want, then leave. The interesting fact is that the vast majority of residential break-ins are done with little or not force and likely could have been prevented.
Opportunities must be eliminated for a break-in resulting in the intruder requiring to take more time or make more noise than they like.
Here are a few tips that can result in making your home less of a 'target' for thieves:
1 cut back shrubs which can create hiding places, especially around basement windows
2 install and maintain lights on the exterior of your home and consider motion sensor lights along walkways and driveways
3 keep all tools and ladders locked and out of sight
4 make sure your door locks are equipped with auxiliary deadbolts with a minimum of a one inch throw
5 equip sliding patio doors with locks designed to secure them to their bottom track
The City of Vernon/RCMP Safe Communities Unit would be happy to do a security audit of your home.
